The increasing popularity of gas insulated switchgear called for the development of appropriate connection systems to standardised bushings in accordance to EN50181.
Tyco Electronics Energy Division has developed two systems, one is related to the outer cone and the other one to the inner cone system. Later is used in power switch gear and power transformers.
Tyco Electronics Energy Division has several decades of experience in the field of hermetically insulated termination systems for medium voltage applications. Thus the bushings designed for gas insulated switchgear meet the standard EN50181 for connection type size 2 (800 A) and size 3 (1250 A) at operating voltage 12 kV up to 36 (42) kV.
The basic construction of the mating termination follows well known design principles and incorporates a lamellate contact system which ensures reliable current transmission via a cone clamp to the conductor. The interface between silicone body of the termination and the bushing is kept permanently sealed via the pressure of a spring between the insulator and the flange of the termination cover. The termination cover is sealed at the flange area with well known sealing methods and at the cable side with heat-shrinkable tubing against ingress of moisture.

While several advances have recently been made in the materials and designs of medium voltage accessories, the techniques for jointing and terminating low voltage cables have largely remained unchanged. Traditionally these have relied upon casting the jointed cables placed inside a slim, compact two part plastic mould with a casting resin typically polyurethane. The purpose of providing a slim, compact mould was to minimise the use of the casting resin which constituted the main price component. The slim mould made the accommodation of the joint with proper clearance between the cores and mould difficult if not impossible especially because of the curvature of the cable ends unwound from drums. Mixing and pouring of the resin, leakage through mould flanges and poorly sealed cable entry ends makes the installation craft sensitive and cumbersome. The resins have limited shelf life and cannot be stocked for emergency use in unpredictable cable breakdowns. The polyurethane resins are not effective in the presence of moisture and are hazardous to health.
Raychem RPG, a pioneer in heat shrinkable cable accessories and the largest manufacturer of cable accessories in India now offer an ideal cable jointing system in the form of ‘RLVJ’ kits. RLVJ joints have been developed keeping in mind the customers requirements of reliability, safety, cost and convenience. RLVJ kits rely on the insulating and sealing properties of a unique mastic coated polymer tape ‘Polystix’ that forms a tough tenacious water tight seal on the cable insulation and femule while providing a high level of factory engineered insulation. Polystix can be easily and effectively applied by any electrician/jointer.. The only effort is the removal of the backing from the mastic and application over the connectors. An elastomeric core separator and mastic enhance the insulation and sealing system of the joint. RLVJ joints have a realiable electrical continuity of the armour through a tinned copper braid and are fully shielded with a steel mesh which in combination with a tough, radiation cross linked heat shrinkable sleeve having a hot melt adhesive coating on its inner surface, provides mechanical protection, sealing and corrosion protection. The kits have unlimited shelf life and can be safely stocked for emergency use. Free installation training is provided to enable the simplest craftsman to reliably, easily and quickly install RLVJ joints.
The performance of RLVJ kits on both PVC cables and XLPE cables has been successfully evaluated at CPRI, Bangalore in accordance with the UK Engg. Recommendations C-81. Several lending utilities like BSES, BEST, NDMC etc have successfully introduced RLVJ kits in their system.

Design And Construction:
  • Screened body: A thin walled conductive outer screen is permanently bonded to the silicone rubber insulating material of the body.
  • Inner screen: A conductive inner layer, as a Faraday cage around the compression or mechanical lug, prevents corona at rated voltage.
  • Compression or mechanical lugs: Specially designed DIN and deep indent compression lugs, as well as tinned, mechanical lugs with shear bolts for connecting either aluminium or copper conductor cables.
  • Stress cone adapter: Relieves electrical stress at the point where the cable screen is cut. The insulated section, extending beyond the wire shielding, provides a convenient point for over sheath testing.
  • Earthing eye and ground lead: Provides a connection point for earthing the screen.
  • Threaded pin: A threaded pin together with a spring washer (wave type) and hex nut ensure a high performance electrical and mechanical contact with the bushing.
  • Rear plug with test point: Removable rear plug with capacitive test point.
  • Test point: The test point is used to determine whether the circuit is energised; alternatively it can be used for phasing.
  • Conductive end cap: Electrical screen and protection of the rear end of the separable connector.

Raychem Heat Shrink Straight Through Joints: The design of a single-core joint for a polymeric insulated cable is described here. The same design principles are used for 3-core cables. For transition joints, special oil barrier tubing are used to transform a draining oil (MI) as well as non draining oil (MIND) paper insulated cable into a quasi polymeric insulated cable with a radial field.
  • Electrical stress control: The stress control tubing and the patch have a precisely defined impedance characteristic which smoothes the electrical field over the connector and cable screen ends. During the installation of 12 kV and 24 kV joints, the special void filling yellow tape will be compressed by the two stress control tubing. The patch over the connector will be compressed by the high shrink force of the triple extruded joint body. For the design of a 42 kV joint only the special yellow void filling tape is used, which is compressed by one stress control tubing. It is not necessary to chamber the cable insulation or to use a connector with specially profiled shape.
  • Insulation and screen: The triple extruded joint body provides the correct thickness of insulation (red) in one installation step. The insulation screen is provided by the outer wall of the tubing, which is of heat-shrinkable conductive polymer (black). This technique saves installation time and ensures a flawless bond between joint insulation and screen, even up to 42 kV.
  • Metallic shielding: Copper mesh and roll springs ensure the correct screen connection across the joint area and make electrical contact with the outer screen of the joint. The design passed tests up to 11 kA short circuit and up to 400 A currents simulating ground fault situation.
  • Outer sealing and protection: The heat used to shrink the outer tubing causes the pre-coated adhesive to melt and flow, resulting in a lasting moisture and corrosion barrier on the cable oversheath. The outer tubing provides mechanical impact and chemical resistance as expected from cable oversheaths. For armoured cables, Raychem joints incorporate either a quick to install galvanised steel joint case or steel tape or fibre glass reinforced heat-shrink wraparound.

Installation Procedure
The elastomeric joint component and the outer sealing tubing are slid over the prepared cable end. The screen ends are electrically smoothed with void filling compound and stress control tubing are shrunk over the cable ends. By simply tightening the bolts of the mechanical connector, the conductors are jointed and then covered with a stress control patch. The elastomeric component is quickly shrunk over the connection area. Roll springs and copper mesh rebuild the cable shield and the oversheath is replaced by an adhesive coated sealing tubing. All kits are supplied with illustrated step by step instructions.

Triple Extruded Elastomeric Technology
The triple extruded joint body, supplied in an expanded form, consists of 3 bonded layers. The two heat-shrinkable outer layers (1. black conductive, 2. red insulating) hold the inner elastomeric layer (3. red insulating) at full diameter. Application of the heat causes the outer layers to shrink, allowing the elastomeric, insulating layer to contract at the same time and closely fit on the jointing cable. Elastomers typically experience a reduction of the contraction force after storage and at cold temperatures. By applying heat this effect is overcome thus allowing an unlimited storage time and installations at low temperatures. The rubber-like characteristics of the insulation material combined with the rigid outer heat-shrinkable wall enable the joint to follow the thermally induced dimensional changes of the cable insulation.

The Surge Arrester monitoring instruments are fully tested for use with any manufacturers surge arrester. The SC003 is a Surge Counter & also provides the additional measurement of total leakage current. The analogue instrument provides a means of monitoring the current through the arrester and the leakage current over the surface of the arrester housing. Significant changes after installation may indicate a deterioration in the arrester or a buildup of surface contamination.
These instruments, which require no auxiliary supply, are designed for installation in the earth connections of a single surge arrester or alternatively the SC003 may be used with the common earth of a three phase set. Fully weatherproofed and sealed for life they are housed in a one piece gravity die cast aluminum case coated to enhance its already high degree of resistance to surface corrosion. The glass viewing window is sealed in place, using a silicon rubber adhesive, and a desiccator is enclosed to ensure any residual moisture trapped during sealing is absorbed for the service life of the counter. Mounting is effected by means of an integrally cast lug at the rear of the case providing a single clearance hole for the galvanized steel M12 bolt supplied. The SC003 is service proven and require no special maintenance or servicing apart from general cleaning of the glass viewing window and the moulded epoxy resin line terminal bushing.

Raychem Screened Gapless Surge Arrester is a “T“-shaped product. It is designed for direct connection onto outer cone bushings in accordance to EN50180 or EN50181 with interface type “C” or for parallel connection mating to the rear entry of the base screened connector system RSTI designed for system voltage up to 41 kV.
The insulation of the screened surge arrester is made of a highly modified silicone rubber characterised by high tracking resistance, elongation at break and non-flammability.
A thin walled screen is permanently bonded onto the insulation and protects the connection system against unintentional contact.
The active part is a metal oxide arrester which meets the requirements of IEC-60099-4 for separable and dead-front arresters.
The combination of screened connector and surge arrester exceeds CENELEC HD 629.1 S2 requirements, which includes BS, VDE and other international specifications.
Easily accessible rear plug with capacitive test point. Few accessories required for system test and earth connection. Complete kit including screened surge arrester, threaded pin and ground lead for three phases facilitates installation and storage.

  • Surge arrester core: Gapless surge arrester core assembly consisting of ZnO (Zinc Oxide) varistors and a mechanical robust structure.
  • Earthing eye and ground lead: Provides a connection point for earthing the screen.
  • Threaded pin: A threaded pin together with a spring washer and hex nut ensure a high performance electrical and mechanical contact with the base connector or bushing.

  • Test point: The test point is used to determine whether the circuit is energised; alternatively it can be used for phasing.

Structure of Polymeric Surge Arrester

Low Voltage Surge Arresters
Raychem’s low voltage surge arresters provide protection for low-voltage overhead lines, consumer in- house supplies, distribution transformers and other systems. The gapless metal-oxide varistor incorporated in the surge arrester reliably imposes low value limits on surges caused by atmospheric over voltages and switching transients, thus protecting the insulation of the consumer-side networks and equipment.
The LV surge arresters are in compliance with Class II requirements as defined by IEC 61643-1. They are designed for applications in which protection against direct contact is not necessary.

General Description: Mechanical connectors, lugs and repair sleeves are designed for use in low and medium voltage applications. Only three sizes cover conductor sizes from 25 mm 2 to 400 mm 2.
All products consist of a tin-plated body, shear-head bolts and inserts for small conductor sizes.
Body: Connector and lug bodies are made of a high-tensile, tin-plated aluminium alloy. The internal surfaces of the conductor holes are grooved.
Connectors are chamfered at the edges and available with or without oil barrier (as blocked and unblocked types) depending on the application requirements.
Lugs are suitable for outdoor and indoor applications and are available with different palm hole sizes.
Contact Bolts: Made of a special aluminium alloy, these contact bolts are double shear-head bolts with hexagon heads. The bolts are treated with a highly lubricating agent and equipped with a special contact ring. Contact bolts are irremovable once their heads have been sheared off.
Inserts: Lugs and connectors are provided with inserts for smaller conductors. These inserts have lengthwise striations and a positioning guide.

Raychem WRSM Wraparounds are a fast and permanent cable repair and sealing system. The repair sleeve is quickly fitted in place by means of its rail and channel closure. A moisture-proof, insulating and tight-fitting repair is then obtained in one step by heating, which makes the sleeve diameter shrink and the adhesive coating melt and flow into interstices. Because of its heat-shrink ability, each WRSM size will fit several different cable diameters. Raychem High Voltage Busbar Insulation Tape is a heat-shrinkable, adhesive coated tape which provides insulation enhancement and protection against accidentally induced discharge. HVBT tape is designed to combine the integrity of a heat-shrinkable tubing with the versatility of a wraparound product.HVBT tape is quick and easy to install. Upon application of heat the tape shrinks down and the adhesive lining melts amalgamating the overlapping layers together, producing a complete lap to lap seal.
A single layer of HVBT tape, two-thirds over lapped, will provide AC voltage withstand (flashover protection) to at least 17.5 kV increasing to 25 kV if a second layer is applied.
Although HVBT tape will stick to itself and other insulating materials it will not adhere to metal or porcelain allowing easy removal for maintenance.

  • HVBT tape offers a simple and effective solution to the problems of retrofit insulation of busbars particularly where existing equipment cannot be dismantled.
  • It can be used for indoor and outdoor applications and is easily installed over a wide variety of shapes including complex connections.
